Pre-amplifier for Turntables

A preamplifier is sometimes needed for turntables because the signal produced by a turntable's cartridge is incredibly weak

Low Output Voltage:

Turntable cartridges generate a very low voltage signal, typically in the millivolt (mV) range. This is far too weak to be directly processed by most modern audio equipment, such as integrated amplifiers, receivers, or soundcards. These components expect a much higher input signal level, usually in the volt (V) range.

High Impedance:

Cartridges also have a high impedance (electrical resistance), meaning they don't easily pass their weak signal. Without impedance matching (which a phono preamp provides), much of the signal is lost.

RIAA Equalization:

Vinyl records are cut with a specific equalisation curve known as the RIAA curve. This means the frequencies are boosted and cut in a particular way during the mastering process. A phono preamp incorporates an RIAA equalization circuit to reverse this curve, restoring the original frequency balance of the recording. Without it, the sound will be severely unbalanced and unnatural.

This compact stereo phono preamplifier boosts turntable signals (from magnetic cartridges) to line level, compatible with your amplifier's line or CD input. It features an on/off switch and a grounding screw to minimize noise. Powered by the included UK power supply, or optionally via a 9V battery (not included).

In essence, a turntable phono preamp acts as a crucial intermediary, boosting the weak signal from the cartridge, matching the impedance, and applying RIAA equalisation to create a listenable and accurate representation of the vinyl recording. Modern equipment often omits this crucial stage, requiring the use of a separate turntable phono preamp.
